Facet 1: Fellowship with God

When we get to know a friend or a co-worker, we can gain trust that he or she will be dependable in the future. The co-worker is able to stay late in order to get a big project complete. The friend is able to help you move into a new apartment. They can give you guidance in a difficult situation. There is a trust that grows in the relationship. This same type of relationship can be achieved when we spend time with God. However, our relationship with God is more than a friend, He is our Messiah.

This first of the 4 Facets of Rest is Fellowship with God. It is the amount of time you spend with God. There are moments when a we get overwhelmed or stressed and we lose touch with our relationship with God. God does not go away from us, but we need to reconnect with God. In Matthew 22:36-40, a Pharisee went up to Jesus in an attempt to trick Him by asking, ‘“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments”’ (NIV, 1984). Time through reading the Bible and prayer are ways we can have fellowship with God.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:24, ‘“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock”’ (NIV, 1984). When people decide to give their lives to God, their lives can be built on the rock. A foundation that will never be shaken.

When we spend time reading Scripture, praying to God, or obeying His commands, we can gain rest in God. Praying and reading Scripture is important when we are looking to rest in God.
