Mark 1:14-20

We now get to this next section where we see Jesus is talking about how the time has come and that the time has been fulfilled. There has been silence for 400 years and now the Son of God has come.

We all have events in life where we must wait for something to happen. It might be a movie we want to see, or it is saving enough money to put a down payment on a house. Those events might be a year or even a few years. But for 400 years, the world had to wait for its Savior.

Jesus even says, “believe in the gospel” (ESV). As it was mentioned in the last section, the word gospel means, “Good news.” But this is more than just news that is great to hear. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ: the Messiah.

Jesus then finds some men who are fishing on the Sea of Galilee. He finds Simon (Peter), Andrew, James, and John and calls to them in Mark 1:17: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people” (ESV). These four men decided to leave their boats and follow Jesus. This was a unique moment because this requires enough faith to trust a man, they had never met and follow Him. And more than just follow Him, but to leave their boats, their nets, and their whole job behind. They had to simply follow Jesus.

We might have difficulty when it comes to follow Jesus because we want to have a job to pay for the bills. It is not a sin to pay the bills. But these men had a desire to follow Christ because He had something to offer than was far better than their jobs could offer.
